The Problem

By the early 1980’s, the facilities and space available at The University of Sydney’s dedicated research facility was limiting the scope and scale of work that could be undertaken.

The university’s facility expansion was primarily to facilitate plant breeding research and associated postgraduate teaching. The expansion was also intended to allow for closer collaboration with other disciplines, particularly in the genotype x environment interactions area.

CAPS was awarded responsibility for the supply and installation work of 5 x gas-fueled power generators to operate as the backup power system for the research facility.

Key Takeaways
  • 5x

    250RZX  gas-fueled Generator Sets

  • 65dBA

    at 7m low noise level

Solution
  • 5x Model 250RZX gas-fueled Generator Sets each rated at 250kVA/200kW Prime, 415/240 Volt, 0.8 pf, 3-phase, 50 Hz, 1500RPM under NTP conditions
  • Controller for automatic start/stop, parallel operation with other similar sets and provision of a high-level interface via Modbus.
  • Engine oil make-up system with reserve oil tank.
  • Exhaust silencer and stainless steel catalytic converter and pipework lagged and sheathed in the plant-room only.
  • Acoustic treatment for the plant room including inlet and air discharge air attenuators rated at 65dBA at 7 metres.
Benefits

This project required strong engineering expertise to achieve all the specifications outlined by the university.

CAPS developed a complete turnkey solution from the project design through to the installation.
The Kohler product sourced is dependable, scalable and upgradable should the university ever consider further expansion in the future.
